Background

Livestock Supplies NZ LTD (Livestock Supplies) is a privately owned business based in Gore, New Zealand. The company was founded in 1985 and aims to promote profitable and sustainable farming along with healthy stock and crops resulting from carefully targeted use of major nutrients and trace elements.

Discussions uncovered a number of areas that the site wanted to improve on such as stock control and costings of manufactured good. Many items manufactured are custom built for each customer and these were being quoted manually, which was leading to errors that impacted on profit margins, which was further complicated by costing of imported goods and the fluctuations of exchange rates. The key thing was to find a solution that took care of everything:

  • Accurate stock control
  • Correctly cost imported goods
  • Cost and manage of manufacturing processes
  • Provide limited, yet accurate and up to date information to sales representatives.
  • Accurate sales margin reporting and ability to apply additional costs to sales transactions, such as freight.
  • Allow for future growth by removing manual processes.

ABM’s fully integrated software with inventory was a great place to start then add on import costing and manufacturing.  Unlike using separate 3rd party add-ons from different suppliers, ABM’s many integrated modules provided a consistent interface and method of use to aid the adoption of the software within the business.

Manufacturing module allows for custom made products to be accurately quoted and then the quote is converted into a manufacturing run.  Customisable production run details ensure production staff see the information they need to build the product correctly.  Inventory is easily transferred to production runs with up to date costings keeping profit margin information accurate.

The addition of the import costing module allows additional costs to be added to the costing of purchased and imported goods.

Further software customisations were provided by Strategic Software to also allow extra costs such as freight to be added onto inventory transfers between locations and products sold, further assisting with the accuracy of sales margins.

Flexible user security within ABM means that managers and staff could only see the information that was relevant to their role, and the sales team can see reporting relevant to their role only.
