REAL LIFE EXAMPLE

Importer and Wholesaler

When you don’t know the final cost of a product until after it has arrived in the country, inventory management is of paramount importance.

  • As a price-sensitive smaller business, our client had a very pressing need to a cost-efficient solution to manage their vast and varied list of inventory.

  • With a huge inventory list a comprehensive product search facility was a must have.

  • As importers of many products, a typical customer order did not simply involve fetching all items from the warehouse and delivering it to the customer in one hit. Our client needed to be able to manage multiple deliveries to the customer as well as multiple deliveries of inbound stock from overseas suppliers. Invoices for each delivery needed to provide a full breakdown of items already delivered and those still on back order until the customer order was completely fulfilled.

  • As an importer, the cost of the inventory is not available until after the goods arrive, but whilst waiting for it to be delivered more stock from that pending delivery could very well be sold! Our client needed to be able to manage the valuation of stock as well as foreign currency exchange rates.

  • Long after the initial implementation of ABM, our client became a supplier to Mitre 10 in New Zealand. Mitre 10 have strict requirements in regards to processing orders and invoices and insist upon electronic communication between their own ERP system and their suppliers as a pre-requisite for them to be trade partners.

ABM had all the functionality this particular client needed to cover its initial requirements around managing its, imported from overseas, inventory.  Comprehensive implementation and training by Strategic Software, ensured that the client could leverage all the software features they needed.

All that was missing at the outset was an invoice layout that provided the right amount of details showing previous deliveries and back order items. Strategic Software was easily able to design and implement a comprehensive invoice format in place of the standard issued template.
Easy and comprehensive search functionality is a standard feature of the ABM product set and allowed our client to find what they were looking for efficiently.

ABM has an additional Import Costing Module, however, our client chose instead to use ABM standard costing which allowed them to calculate their product costs outside of ABM and then alter the standard cost in ABM subsequent to those calculations.

The general ledger is automatically updated when the standard cost is updated, so even if stock has been sold, the profit and loss is instantly corrected once the standard cost is changed.

When our client became an authorised supplier to Mitre 10 in New Zealand, they added the ABM EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) module to their ABM suite.  Orders and Invoices could now be sent between their ABM software and Mitre 10’s own ERP solution with no manual intervention, almost eliminating human error from the ordering and billing cycle and saving massive amounts of time from both companies.
